This is the second year in a row that I have worked on the promotional pictures for the Polynesian Cultural Center’s Haunted Lagoon. It was lot of fun working with the art directors and graphic designer from the PCC. I wish I would have taken some behind the scenes pictures, there were about 15 people working together to create these images. I was used a number of different strobes and a huge fog machine to add the mist affect. Big thanks to Jenica Taylor for all the graphics. This is defiantly a good year to go to the Haunted Lagoon, it is going to be bigger and better than last. To get more information about the Haunted Lagoon click here.
ARCADE FIRE : INTERVENTION
On a recent evening my wife came home and needed to process things, stuff from the day. Her brother was staying with us and both of them process a lot of things with music. Her brother put on a song and they went in the zone appreciating the music. We turned up the song really loud in my office. The song is a good one, I thought I’d post it for others to enjoy. “Intervention” by Arcade Fire (very cool band). The live performance is posted here because I love the energy of the performance. Turn it up and feel it.
KONA HAWAII WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY : ROYAL KONA RESORT
Just got back from photographing a wedding in Kona on the big island of Hawaii at the Royal Kona Resort. I usually don’t post images on my blog so fast, but as I was downloading my cards this one caught my eye. I think Silvia looked stunning in this dress, you will have to wait to see the back when I am done editing. Look out for the full post in a few.
HAWAII FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY : DIDERICKSEN UNDERWTER PORTRAITS SHARKS COVE
The Didericksen family took their vacation in Hawaii and wanted to document the trip with some beach family portraits and underwater photography. Combining family photos, vacation and the ocean should result in FUN. We had a great time getting these shots. This family had good chemistry, especially mom and dad in the final shots below.
JACQUES COUSTEAU STENCIL
My wife’s brother was here for a couple of weeks for work. In the evenings after work he conceived of and did this stencil project in my studio/ office that is still under construction. He and I have done stenciling together before. Joe is a really talented, creative guy. Here is the image that Joe used as the inspiration to create the stencil. For those unfamiliar with stenciling from scratch, this was a pretty ambitious stencil to create. The image and accompanying quote are Jacques Cousteau. This is the perfect piece of art and source of inspiration for my work space. The video is freeze framing with a GoPro Hero cam. Joe coined the quote at the beginning. My son was getting over the flu so he makes a cameo in the frames, as does our dog.
NICKALA & TONY : HAWAII WEDDING – FANGER ESTATES, HAU’ULA OAHU
Nickala & Tony had a beautiful wedding at Fanger Estates located in Hau’ula Hawaii on the windward side of Oahu. This is the first wedding that I have photographed where it was also Skyped. They must have had at least 4 laptops there. Definitely a modern Idea to share your wedding with the ones you love across the world, who couldn’t make it to Hawaii.
MY INSPIRATION
Every once in awhile I come across something that inspires me. I think you’ll enjoy this video- Mickey Smith in “Dark Side of the Lens.” I think most everyone has someone who does a line of work or lives life in a way that they admire or aspire to. This guy is that for me. I don’t think many people live the kind of life where they constantly push the envelope, filling their days with what truly inspires them to make their living, not driven by money or fame. Or maybe I just like it becasue wearing a wet suit and diving into waves makes you feel a little like a super hero. I like a lot of things he says in the video but one of my favorite thoughts is “If I am going to scrape a living, at least it’s a living worth scraping.”
7 YEARS : NORTH SHORE OAHU HAWAII UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY
The last few weeks I haven’t had a lot of time to blog, I’ve been shooting almost every day, but I wanted to put up a quick shot of this couple from their 7 year wedding anniversary water shoot. This is one of the owner’s of Surfin Tacos in Hau’ula. Have you tried their chocolate cheesecake? It’s definitely worth topping off your meal with, we are big fans.
UNDERWATER TRASH THE DRESS SHOOT: FEATURED ON OMG I’M GETTING MARRIED!
I got an e-mail last week from the owner of “OMG I’m Getting Married!”, They are a UK based blog out of London. They asked if they could feature Isabella & Ryan’s “Trash the Dress” wedding pictures. Go check them out at www.omgimgettingmarried.com.
KAYLIN : UNDERWATER SENIOR PORTRAITS HAWAII, NORTH SHORE OAHU
Kaylin came to Hawaii on vacation with her family and best friend and thought it would be a good idea to get her senior portraits taken while in Hawaii. Not a bad idea, especially if you want to have something a little different like underwater senior portraits. We first started taking pictures in the colorful surf town of Haleiwa, and them mosied on over to Waimea Bay to photograph her underwater. It was a lot of fun having her best friend there, and as you can see in the pictures below they had a lot of fun.
TE MANAHUA, MAORI FESTIVAL : POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER – LAIE HAWAII
Here are a few pictures from Te-Manahua, Maori Festival at the Polynesian Cultural Center this last weekend. I have been photographing special events and some marketing for the Polynesian Cultural Center for a little over a year now, and this has got to be one of the best contests I have ever seen. There were performers from all over including New Zealand and London, England. The winners were a local group and I got chills as they performed. I don’t know if it was because they were doing the Haka 4 feet away, or the fact that I was looking though my canon 70-200 telephoto lens right into their eyes. Whatever it was, it was amazing and they received a standing ovation.
HAWAIIAN SURFER : NORTH SHORE OAHU
One of Halau Nalu’s talented Hawaiian surfers Kahia Walker surfs on a traditional Hawaiian surfboard called a Kiko’o. It’s kinda like the Alaia just a little thicker and heavier. He is also wearing traditional malo and haku, and on top of that he is fluent in Hawaiian. Congratulations and good luck at Kamehameha this year.
