BEYOND THE VEIL : HAWAII WEDDING VEILS

I have been working with Summer Kester, designer of high end wedding veils and owner of “Beyond the Veil.”  I am helping her with the photography for her website and catalog.  I will post the website once it is complete.  We had Patria model the final few veils.  I can’t wait for the business to launch because the veils are stunning and unique.

JONNA & DAN : MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY, LAIE HAWAII

On Saturday I was able to squeeze in a maternity shoot with Jonna and Dan at Velzy Land on the North Shore.  The ambiance made it a lot of fun,  we had perfect surf to watch as the sun was setting and I think Pacific Vibrations was playing live down the beach.  I look forward to shooting their newborn pictures next month.  Good luck Jonna and Dan!

FILM IS NOT DEAD WORK SHOP : LAIE HAWAII WITH JONATHAN CANLAS

This has been a crazy week!  I have not had a second to blog or even think about blogging.  I attended an intense film work shop by Wedding and commercial  photographer Jonathan Canlas.  In the next few weeks I will explain why film and post some images from the workshop as they come back from the lab.  Saturday was the day of shooting families, after 10 fun sessions I was exhausted.  All of the families were beautiful and fantastic, check back at the end of next week to see.  I really don’t like to post without at least one photo.  Here is a shot I took of the Byodo-In Temple, located in the Valley of the Temples.   All day I was shooting with a medium format twin lens reflex camera, but at the end I busted out my digital to get this last picture.

URIE : FAMILY PORTRAITS LAIE HAWAII

Living so close to a vacation destination like the North Shore of Oahu I end up shooting several portraits for families who are here on  vacation.  This family used to live here.  The Uries worked in Laie in the 70’s at BYU-Hawaii .  It was interesting to hear them talk about Sam’s Store (when Sam ran it), and the old post office that looked like a log cabin just down the street from Hukilau Beach.  Even though there have been many changes since then, they said it still feels like country.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

Today my Mom turns 70, she is very active and doesn’t look or act her age.  As I am keeping this a photography blog I feel justified in this post because my roots in photography come from her.  She is the one that gave me my first medium format camera, an older Mamiya 645, she is also handed down to me my first real lighting setup a novatron power pack with 4 heads.  This was way more lighting power than I knew what to do with at the time, I remember the lights would flicker in the house any time all four heads fired.  I also remember every house we lived in my mom would turn the bathroom into a dark room to process her film,  I can still smell the chemicals.  Thanks mom for your creative inspiration and constant support in helping me become the photographer that I am today. Much Aloha Mark

MAILE AND KENRIK : WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY – KAILUA HAWAII

Kailua, Hawaii has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it is an amazing place to get married.  Congratulations Maile and Kenrik!  This was one of the most fun weddings I’ve been to.  We started off at the home of one of Maile’s good friends, with stylist Marie Rangel.   After a few drinks and getting all dolled up, it was time to head to the Kailua beach for the ceremony.  It was a blustery day in Hawaii, but beautiful.

After the ceremony,  everyone met up at Maile’s grandma’s house for the reception.   This was truly a fun party, starting off with a band that played Hawaiian music.  Followed with a delicious Itallian bar, cooked on the spot.  After dinner, the reggae band showed up.  Maile and Kenrik cut the cake and had their first dance as newlyweds.

My daughter looked over my shoulder while I was posting these and this what she said about Maile: “Oooh daddy, she is beautiful.  I want her to come over to our house.”  My daughter is enamored with all the wedding pictures she sees around here.
