I normally don’t post weddings this quickly after the date, but Geneva is being deployed this weekend. Just as it is clear in this photo, Geneva and Aj definitely “live for today”. They had a beautiful wedding ceremony at Ke Iki beach, and afterwards they jumped into the oh so inviting ocean. It was one of those days when everything came together, the sea was calm, beach uncrowded, and the sunset was amazing.
THE BANG BANG CLUB : SNAPSHOTS FROM A HIDDEN WAR
Recently with hearing about the two war photographers who were killed in Libya, Tim Hetherington, and Chris Hondros, I’ve been thinking about the situation. I find their stories and the stories of people doing similar work really compelling. The ethics around what they do and the crazy intensity of capturing images of horrible events. While I wonder about how people emotionally handle that work I know that it’s often images that connect us to an event. The images from the recent tsunami in Japan for example are what helped me grasp the immensity of the situation. I think we need these images. Last week on NPR’s Fresh air Terry Gross interviewed two veteran war photographers Joao Silva and Greg Marinovich. It was interesting to hear the stories behind their photos. Heres the link to the their interview. They have also compiled a book of their memoirs called “The Bang Bang Club”
TRANSCEND : JON MOZO STORY
Devin Graham and the Mozo family just came out with the well done trailer for Transcend : the Jon Mozo story. I didn’t get the chance to meet Jon, except through his family, who have been friends here in Hawaii. I have a lot of respect and love for Jon though. He was an incredible ocean and surf photographer and his images inspire me. Can’t wait for the full movie to come out, enjoy this powerful trailer. MICHAEL + KUMIKO : HONOLULU WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Kumiko and Michael flew all the way from Japan for a Hawaii destination wedding here in Honolulu. It was fun to see the two families come together. Kumiko’s family spoke a little English and Michael’s family spoke a little Japanese. The ceremony location was beautiful with Diamond Head in the background. Congratulations Kumiko and Michael.
ALOHA KO’OLAULOA : HAWAIIAN IMMERSION
Here are a few photos from Aloha Ko’olauloa, the first was used for the banner and posters. This is an annual community event to help support the Hawaiian Immersion schools of Ko’olauloa. It is a fun day with ono food booths, entertainment, games for the kids, silent auction, free used books, bake sale and even lomi lomi massage. If you couldn’t make it this year, definitely look for it next year. The Hawaiian Immersion program has been an amazing experience for our whole family, and I don’t know if there are better kumu than the ones who have helped teach our kids over the years.
LINDSAY & BRANDON : HAWAII DESTINATION WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER – KAUAI
One of my favorite islands in Hawaii is Kauai, so I was super excited when Lindsay asked me to be their wedding photographer for their destination wedding on Kauai. Lindsay and Brandon had a fun group of friends fly in from Alaska. One of them even bought a van for the week while they were here, see it below. Even though we had a little rain, the wedding turned out beautifully, and we were blessed with an amazing rainbow just in time for the ceremony.
TANYA + ADAM : UNDERWATER ENGAGEMENT PHOTOGRAPHY – HAWAII
As I arrived at this engagement shoot on the North Shore, the rain started and I thought for sure Tanya and Adam would want to reschedule, but they were troopers. I’m glad because it ended up being a fantastic photo shoot. The video I included is a little behind the scenes look at the underwater part of their session. Adam has been deployed three times overseas already and I wish them all the best in their upcoming wedding and life together. Congratulations Tanya and Adam, can’t wait to photograph your wedding. You guys are a beautiful couple.
LINDSEY + JAY : HAWAII BEACH WEDDING
Lindsay and Jay had a beautiful destination Hawaii beach wedding on the North Shore of Oahu. After the ceremony we captured some shots of them together on the beach as the sun went down, and then headed to the Turtle Bay Restaurant, Ola‘s for a dinner reception where they did a traditional tea ceremony. What a fantastic night this was for a wedding. The couple, their family and friends, the setting, it was all stunning.
LARA + CHRIS : hawaii engagement photographe
What a beautiful couple. I had such a great time shooting these engagement photos with Lara and Chris on the North Shore of Oahu. They were adventurous, fun, and clearly in love. Everything seemed to work together really well, the sunlight, palm trees, wardrobe, and their joy. Congratulations Chris and Lara!
TUIFUA FAMILY : FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY – HAWAII
Congratulations to Kristen and William, welcoming their fifth beautiful child! I included links to three previous photo shoots I have done when their family was just four, then grew to five, then six and now a family of seven! They are family to us. They have been one of my favorite families to document over the years. It has been fun to see Grandma Susi over the years as well and I’m glad we got some great photos with her. As you can see they are all so photogenic. And as Patria always says, Kristen is one hot mama! But it’s their genuine love and kindness with all those incredible personalities that makes them stand out in a crowd.
THE LITTLE MERMAID : A PRODUCTION BY CTO – Hawaii
As I started to edit these photos of “The LIttle Mermaid”, My daughter looked over my shoulder and said “Oh daddy! Do you mean there are mermaids in this island? Were they nice? Oh they are so beautiful! I want to be a mermaid”. I never had the heart to tell her they weren’t real.
Children’s Theatre of Oahu (CTO) approached me about taking some underwater pictures of mermaids to advertise their production of “The Little Mermaid”. The video I included is a behind the scenes look at our underwater shoot. The girls did a great job in the water even though it wasn’t the calmest of conditions. The dancer playing Ariel had some serious diving skills, she would go down and then just calmly cruise along the ocean floor. Have to thank the Makeup artists Karlotta Carvalho, and Vasi Wolfgramm for the great job they did. Go support this fun production of CTO’s “The little Mermaid”.
