FILM IS NOT DEAD WORKSHOP : LAIE HAWAII

I finally got my film processed from the “Film Is Not Dead” workshop that I attended last November.  The work shop was hosted by film photographer Jonathan Canlas.  He is a destination wedding photographer based in Utah.  The work shop was 4 days and was located in Laie Hawaii.  It was nice I didn’t have to travel too far, just about a block. Jonathan had different models for us to photograph.  I shot mostly with my Mamiya 645 and a twin reflex I borrowed from a fellow workshop attendee.  It was fun shooting film again and to learn from a talented photographer with his own unique style.  The images below are from the workshop and straight from the lab with no digital enhancing.  I recommend this workshop for any wedding photographer, even if you don’t shoot film.

To see details for the next workshop go to Jonathan’s blog at www.canlasphotography.blogspot.com

Some shots of a few other workshop attendees.  Also in town for the workshop was incredible photographer, Seth Smoot (not pictured here) who I knew in New York City- it was extra fun for my wife and I to reconnect with the Smoot’s!  You can check his work out at www.sethsmoot.com

I think these two were also attending.

The remainder of the photos below make me think of fun, fresh, simple, carefree Hawaii beach shots.

KE ALAKA’I : BYU HAWAII LAIE

I got a call a couple of days ago from the graphic designer that does the layout for BYU- Hawaii’s school paper, the Ke Alaka’i. They said they were doing an article on weddings and asked if they could publish a few of the photos that I had taken.   I didn’t realize that they were going to use them for the cover and the spread inside.  As a BYU-Hawaii alumni, it’s always fun to interact with the school.  I thought I’d post the spread.

You can check them out online at www.kealakai.byuh.edu

CARRIE & PAT : HAWAII WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Pat and Carrie got married in California, but wanted to celebrate in Hawaii by having a “cake and skate” with their friends.  Very clever and memorable idea!  It’s always fun when a couple celebrates their wedding in their very own style- which is definitely what Pat and Carrie did.

PAMELA & BRENT: KE IKI BEACH HAWAII

This was a sizzling hot photo session at Ke Iki Beach Bungalows!  Pamela and Brett celebrated their 15 year wedding anniversary in Hawaii.  What better way to celebrate than to capture the sexy spark that is obviously still there after 15 years for this beautiful couple.

KONA HAWAII WEDDING

Black lava, white coral, black tux, white dress.  This created some nicely dramatic wedding pictures.  I had a great time photographing Ashley and Brett’s wedding in Kona, Hawaii.  Here are a few shots, I will be posting more as I finish editing them. Thanks Malia for helping me with the lighting and creating the coral heart.
Congratulations Ashley and Brett!

OLIVIA & DEXTER : KAILUA HAWAII WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

I love the way these pictures turned out.  This beautiful couple traveled from California to wed in Kailua, Hawaii.  Their wedding was a stylish, fun time and I was lucky to be a part of their intimate wedding.  I love sunset weddings- it’s always stunning.  I worked with wedding planner, Kiana Washington- who is a fabulous up and coming wedding planner.  This is the second wedding I’ve worked with her on and it has been a great experience.  Congratulations Olivia and Dexter!  I enjoyed every second with both of you, along with your family and friends.

MEGAN NA’IHE : HAWAII NEW BORN PHOTOGRAPHY

One of my favorite families to photograph- I wanted to post a few photograph’s of Megan Naihe and their newest addition.  Our families have known each other from previous years living in California and somehow here we are living on Oahu.  Megan and Keli’i are living the life in Hau’ula with their three little ones.  There is something very timeless about black and white candid’s and snapshots taken on a front porch.

JOSH & SHARLIE : HAWAII WEDDING OAHU

This was the last wedding that I photographed at the Laie Temple before it closed for a year to be renovated. The night before their wedding there was an island wide power outage and it was rainy. Umbrella’s seem to add a fun touch to wedding pictures though. Sharlie and Josh had a beautiful wedding and it was great fun working with them. Congratulations!

CANON 5D MARK II : PIPELINE HAWAII

I am loving the new Canon 5D Mark II camera.  When I combine it with Canons L lenses, I really love the results.  I didnt realize how much I would use the HD video, but it has been fun to incorporate the video into the last two weddings I shot.  I will be posting those soon. Here is a test video and a few shots from pipe, located on the north shore of Oahu.

BRIGHTON LOVERIDGE : NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY LAIE HAWAII

Congratulations Jonna and Dan!  One of the best parts about being a photographer is that I am mostly working with people who are in a happy time in their lives whether it is getting married or having a baby.  Jonna and Dan have a blog that says:

“We are a small family who live on a small island, in a small town, in a small house…. this is our blog mainly about our small child… “

This is just one family that I have recently phtotographed who is living their dreams and making it in Hawaii.  Check out their happy little blog here.

Check out all the pictures from their shoot here.
