HALAU NALU : HONOLI’I – HAWAII

Nothing is as fun as finding a way to give back to one’s community.  I am very lucky to have found such a good organization like Halau Nalu that lets me combine my two loves photography and surfing.  Halau Nalu is a Laie based keiki surf club that is headed by Isaiah and Rebecca Walker with a lot of support and involvement from all of the kids parents.  I was so excited when they offered to bring me to Hilo to document their annual  surf contest at Honoli’i.  It was a lot of fun hanging out with the kids, they are such a talented group.  The book below is one that I just published with blurb, of the trip to Honoli’i.  Family and friends of the kids can click on the picture below and it will take you were you can buy a copy.  I have also compiled a slide show that will be shown at the Halau Nalu party.  On the slide show there are photos that I have taken throughout the year, ending with Honolii.   Click here for the slideshow: http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewalbum.html?bm=175725 .  Click on the collage below to see the first 15 pages of the book!

TAYLOR : BRIDAL PHOTOGRAPHY, LAIE OHAU HAWAII

This month has been off the charts busy so I haven’t had much time to blog.  It has been a fun month, photographing so many families and weddings.  One family shoot yesterday took place just a few houses down from where Barack Obama was staying in Kailua.  Too bad I didn’t get to see him though.

I just shot Taylor’s bridal this evening and thought I would post one of the shots.  More to come later.

TANYA AND RODNEY : WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY – NORTH SHORE OAHU HAWAII

This fun loving couple from Utah, met in Hawaii and returned with their families to get married.  It was supposed to be a Waimea Valley wedding reception, but a landslide, several days before, changed their plans.  Instead they celebrated at Shark’s Cove Grill, against the wide backdrop of the ocean.  The surf was huge on the north shore, crashing over the coral of Shark’s Cove.  This location allowed for a lot of fun with the surf shops and boutiques.   Shark’s Cove is one of the most breathtaking locations to watch the sunset on the north shore.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK : PERSONAL

No, my birthday wasn’t recent, it was in September, but I just got my present.  A new surfboard.  It took about 2 months from the time I ordered the blank to have it shaped and glassed.  I am not one to ride just either short boards or longboards, I love to ride all kinds of boards.  I knew exactly what I wanted shaped, so I asked local shaper, Chuck Andrus, to carve out the blank and had Ed Surfoss glass it.  I had Chuck put a step in the tail and deck, spoon out the nose and keep just a little “rocker.” I was trying to re-create a board circa 1969. The picture below is of Ed glassing the bottom of the board with a brick red tint.  It took me awhile, but I found the fabric in-lay at Kaimuki Dry Good’s in town for the deck patch, and had Ed outline everything with white pinlines.  I took this board out last week and loved it.  Thanks Patria.

Stay tuned for pictures from my trip to the Big Island with Halau Nalu.
